Kyleena

April 2017 einsetzen.

What to expect with Kyleena

Your periods are likely to change. During the first 3 to 6 months, bleeding and spotting days may increase, and your period may become irregular. Some women have heavy bleeding during this time.

Once your body adjusts, monthly bleeding usually decreases.

Kyleena contains a small amount of a hormone that may reduce the monthly thickening of your uterine lining. This thinning of the uterine lining can reduce monthly bleeding.

Over time, your periods are likely to become shorter and lighter, or they may stop entirely.

When Kyleena is removed, your periods should return.

About 12 out of 100 women stop having periods after 1 year of Kyleena use. If you do not have a period for 6 weeks during Kyleena use, call your doctor.

FAQ:

  1. 1DO I HAVE TO USE KYLEENA FOR 5 YEARS?
No. Kyleena can be removed at any time by your healthcare provider. You could become pregnant as soon as Kyleena is removed, so you should use another method of birth control if you do not want to become pregnant.

  2. 2SHOULD I CHECK THAT KYLEENA IS IN PLACE?
Yes, you can eventually check that Kyleena is in the proper position by feeling the removal threads. If you are able to feel the threads, it may be a good habit to do this once a month. If you think that Kyleena may not be in the right place, ask your doctor to check that Kyleena is still in the right place.

  3. 3HOW SOON AFTER THE PLACEMENT OF KYLEENA SHOULD I RETURN TO MY DOCTOR FOR CHECK UP?
Call your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Otherwise, you should return for a follow-up visit 6 weeks after Kyleena is placed to make sure that it is in the right position.

  4. 4CAN I USE TAMPONS WITH KYLEENA?
Yes. Because Kyleena is in your uterus, not your vagina, you can still use tampons.

  5. 5WILL MY PARTNER BE ABLE TO FEEL KYLEENA DURING SEX?
You and your partner should not feel Kyleena during intercourse. Kyleena is placed in the uterus, not in the vagina. Very rarely your partner may feel the threads. If this occurs, or if you or your partner experience pain during sex, talk with your doctor.

  6. 6DOES KYLEENA START WORKING RIGHT AWAY?
Your doctor will confirm if you need to use back-up birth control after Kyleena is placed. Usually Kyleena is inserted during your menstrual bleeding. It is recommended not to have intercourse during the first 7 days after insertion. If you do so, you will be protected from the beginning.

  7. 7WHAT IF I CHANGE MY MIND AND WANT TO TRY TO GET PREGNANT?
Kyleena can be removed at any time by your doctor, and you can try getting pregnant right away. Because Kyleena is completely reversible, there's no waiting period. In fact, about 7 out of 10 women who tried to become pregnant conceived within a year of having Kyleena removed.

  8. 8WILL IT HURT TO HAVE KYLEENA PLACED?
Everyone is different, and some women may experience pain, bleeding, dizziness or spotting during or after placement. Those symptoms should go away shortly. To soften the cervix of the uterus, special medicaments can be applied before insertion.

  9. 9WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF KYLEENA?
Common side effects of Kyleena include:

  10. Pain, bleeding, or dizziness during and after placement.

  11. Expulsion. Kyleena may come out by itself. This is called expulsion. Expulsion occurs in about 4 out of 100 women. You may become pregnant if Kyleena comes out. If you think that Kyleena has come out, call your doctor to check.

  12. Missed menstrual periods. About 12 out of 100 women stop having periods after 1 year of Kyleena use. If you do not have a period for 6 weeks during Kyleena use, call your doctor. When Kyleena is removed, your menstrual periods should return.

  13. Changes in bleeding. You may have bleeding and spotting between menstrual periods, especially during the first 3 to 6 months. Sometimes the bleeding is heavier than usual at first. However, the bleeding usually becomes lighter than usual and may be irregular. Call your doctor if the bleeding remains heavier than usual or increases after it has been light for a while.

  14. Cysts on the ovary. About 22 out of 100 women using Kyleena develop a cyst on the ovary. These cysts usually disappear on their own in two to three months. However, cysts can cause pain and sometimes need surgery.

Other common side effects include:

  1. Inflammation or infection of the outer part of your vagina (vulvovaginitis)

  2. Abdomen or pelvic pain

  3. Headache or migraine

  4. Acne or greasy skin

  5. Painful periods

  6. Sore or painful breasts
